Six supermarket workers in France have escaped unhurt after being held hostage by suspected armed robbers.

The drama unfolded early this morning when a gang entered a Lidl store at Sevran in Seine Saint-Denis, in the northern suburbs of the French capital. Police say they could have made off with the shop’s takings too but ran into problems reaching the safe and that allowed officers to intervene.” The area was immediately sealed off with units from special operations called in. Three hostages were gradually freed in the hours before the gunmen surrendered. A third member of the gang was later arrested after escaping the initial police cordon.More about: ,
