At least two senior commanders of the elite Revolutionary Guards have been assassinated in a suicide bomb attack in which 60 people were killed or wounded, according to Iranian media reports.

A regional Guards commander is believed to have died alongside the deputy head of ground forces of the unit as they met tribal leaders. Iranian state TV says the Guards commanders were targeted by a suicide bomber who detonated explosives strapped to his body. The Revolutionary Guard is a branch of Iran’s military, founded after the Iranian revolution. It is thought to number as many as 120,000 with its own small naval and air units. It also controls the paramilitary Basij militia deployed on the streets of Iranian cities after the disputed presidential election in June. Scores of people are believed to have been killed during opposition demonstrations as reformist leaders called for a recount amid allegations of election fraud. The attack took place in the volatile south-east of the country. The Sistan-Baluchestan region, bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, is the scene of frequent clashes between security forces, Sunni rebels and drug traffickers.More about: Attack, Iran
