Nefertiti’s new Berlin home open to the public

Berlin’s bomb damaged Neues Museum has opened its doors after a 212 million euro refit.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel cut the ribbon in an inauguration ceremony but the 3,400 year-old Egyptian beauty, Queen Nefertiti was the star of the show.

The bust was spirited out of Egypt by a German archaeologist in 1913 shortly after it was unearthed on the banks of the Nile.

Painstakingly restored to its former glory by the British architect David Chipperfield,
the museum which was almost destroyed during the Second World War, is a symbol of Germany’s reunification. It is now open to the public.
