Four police centres have been attacked by suspected Taliban militants in the northwest and in Lahore in Pakistan.

At least 24 people have been killed in the co-ordinated attacks, with the three strikes in Punjab province near the Indian border in particular sparking panic. While Kohat in the northwest is in the heart of territory disputed between the government and various tribal groups in open rebellion against Islamabad, attacks in Punjab, Pakistan’s economic heartland, are much rarer. In Kohat 10 people were killed when a sucide bomber set off an explosion in a car outside a police station. In Lahore eyewitnesses reported black-garbed gunmen storming two police training centres, the elite police academy and the regional headquarters of the police’s Federal Investigation Agency, where 21 people were killed in a suicide bomb attack last year. One of the training centres was also attacked earlier this year.
