Winter has reared its sudden and unwelcome head in large parts of central and eastern Europe.

In south east Germany snow and ice have caused travel chaos over the last couple of days. In spite of the hazardous conditions only a few minor accidents were reported. A similar situation in the Czech Republic where the picture postcard scenes made driving a nightmare. Heavy snowfall and strong winds caused havoc for commuters. The mountainous areas in north Bohemia and east Moravia were especially affected with several road and rail lines being blocked by falling trees. Poland also felt the brunt of the wintry weather. Rainfall across the west of the country turned into sleet and snow in central areas and one woman was injured by a falling tree. In north eastern Poland, some 90,000 people were left without electricity, when heavy winds knocked out the power grid.More about: Weather
