The number of Europeans contracting HIV is accelerating along with the number of people practising unsafe sex according to a Swedish think tank based in Brussels.

The Health Consumer Powerhouse has compiled the first Euro HIV Index of countries’ ability to deal with the virus in terms of prevention, care and rights for sufferers. Luxembourg is the top performer, followed by Malta and Switzerland. The UK is ninth, just ahead of Ireland while Italy, Greece and Romania have the most amount of work to do. At the end of 2007, there were about 800,000 Europeans living with HIV, eight percent more than the previous year. The study evokes certain problem areas including poor strategies to stop the spread of infection in prisons, little or no access to care for illegal migrants and discrimination against HIV sufferers in work and school.More about: , ,
