Clinton visits Moscow seeking support for sanctions

US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton is in Russia on a two-day visit, largely aimed at securing Moscow’s support for sanctions against Iran should they prove necessary.

Tehran has agreed to a visit by UN inspectors to its newly revealed uranium enrichment site near Qom. But if international talks over its nuclear plans fail, Washington will need Moscow’s backing for sanctions. President Medvedev recently signalled a turnaround in traditional Russian opposition to the measures. President Barack Obama’s decision to redraw a missile defence shield in eastern Europe may prove a bargaining chip. Some Russian officials say equal partnership in the missile system could be an adequate quid pro quo.
