Armenian President still plans to go to Turkey

Armenia’s President Serzh Sarksyan has said he will visit Turkey later this week despite question marks hanging over an historic peace deal.

The Armenian leader said he saw no serious basis not to accept the invitation from Ankara as he headed for talks in Moscow with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev. Both Turkey and Armenia signed a peace making agreement at the weekend and Sarksyan and Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will seek to build on that when they meet for a World cup qualifier in Turkey on Wednesday. Turkish President Abdullah Gull met Sarksyan at the corresponding fixture in Armenia last year. The rebel region of Nagorno Karabakh and the killing of 1,5 million Armenians by Ottaman Turks during the first world war continues to cast a shadow over any potential diplomatic thaw.More about: , ,
