Italian police are trying to establish why a Libyan man threw a bomb at an army barracks, severely injuring himself. A soldier was slightly wounded in the blast at the Santa Barbara base in Milan.

The attacker is reported to have lost his hand in the explosion which happened early this morning at the barracks near the famous San Siro football stadium.

Police identified the man as a Libyan aged about 35 but had no immediate indication of the motive for the attack.

It has been reported that witnesses heard him shout something about Italian troops in Afghanistan as he threw the device.  But that has not been confirmed.
