Policeman killed in Chechnya bomb blast

A bomb attack in the Russian province of Chechnya last night has left one policeman dead and 14 other people injured.

The device was detonated by remote control as a crowd of policemen and civilians were gathering at the scene of a first explosion in the Chechen capital Grozny. Chechnya’s Kremlin-backed authorities said earlier this year that they were close to eliminating Islamist and other militants. But recent attacks there and in the neighbouring republics of Dagestan and Ingushetia have raised fears that the volatile North Caucasus could descend into open civil war.More about: ,
