European airline passengers might have to endure strict anti-terrorism rules on liquids in hand luggage at least until 2012. The European Union’s transport commissioner has proposed that the restrictions introduced in 2006 will stay until technology that can tell the difference between dangerous and non-threatening fluids becomes widely available.

The EU’s transport ministers and the European Parliament still have to discuss this before they decide. The current rules are set to expire in April next year. They were imposed after the British police uncovered a terrorist plot to detonate liquid explosives aboard several US-bound flights departing from London’s Heathrow airport. European Commissioner Antonio Tajani said he hoped the rules would be scrapped by 2014 at the latest.More about: , ,
