Triumphant return for Honduran ex-president Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, holed up in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa, looks set to remain there after the country’s interim leader Roberto Micheletti ignored calls to reinstate him.
Regional foreign ministers and the head of the Organisation of American States are in Honduras to pressure for his return to power. A presidential election is due at the end of November but there are doubts it will be free and fair. Zelaya was toppled on June 28 after cosying up to Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez. Powerful Honduran conservative groups claim Chavez was urging Zelaya to change the constitution and extend his presidency.
