Vaclav Klaus finally picked up the phone. After days of trying, a top EU official has managed to get the Czech president to agree to a talk about putting his signature on the Lisbon Treaty.

Only the Czech and Polish presidents’ signatures are needed to complete its ratification. It is designed to give the 27-nation EU a clearer world profile by appointing a full-time president and foreign minister and streamlining decision-making. European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek will travel to Prague this Friday. Current EU president Sweden says Klaus has asked that a footnote be added to the document before he will sign it into force, a footnote linked to the charter of fundamental rights, but that he did not provide any details. Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said Klaus wanted the additional wording and would sign if the Czech Constitutional Court rejects a legal challenge to the treaty filed by a group of senators.More about: Czech Republic, EU Parliament, Treaty of Lisbon
