Judges in Italy ruling on whether prime minister Silvio Berlusconi should have legal immunity have asked for more time to make their decision.

They are expected to make their verdict tomorrow but the Italian media say the Constitutional Court is divided and may need weeks before passing judgement. The court’s 15 judges started debating yesterday whether a law shielding the prime minister and other holders of state office from prosecution is unconstitutional. Prosecutors in the case argue that constitutionally all Italians are equal before the law. The immunity law was one of Berlusconi’s first acts after he formed his latest government last year. As a result of this legal battle, four ongoing trials against Berlusconi have been suspended.
