Italy’s Berlusconi awaits immunity ruling

Legislation shielding Silvio Berlusconi from prosecution because he is Italy’s Prime Minister is being reviewed by the country’s top court today.

Judges will examine whether his immunity is valid or if it violates the constitutional principle that all citizens are equal before the law. Prosecutors in legal cases against Berlusconi have asked the tribunal to rule. They are hoping to reverse a law that halted proceedings against the 73-year-old conservative businessman. The immunity legislation was one of the first measures passed by parliament when Berlusconi returned to power for a third time last year. Even if it is invalidated, Italy’s Justice Minister Angelino Alfano says the government will continue.More about: ,
