He has won a landslide election victory and been invited to form Greece’s next government but, for George Papandreou, the real hard work lies ahead.

After meeting President Karolos Papoulias today, Papandreou will name his cabinet tomorrow. The Socialists are back in power after more than five years in opposition. But will they be able to deliver on pledges to lead Greece out of a worsening economic downturn? Voters put their faith in Papandreou’s tax-and-spend ticket, rejecting austerity measures proposed by outgoing premier Costas Karamanlis. Having lost the latest clash between heirs of Greece’s famous political dynasties, he has now quit his conservative party’s leadership.More about: ,
