Three share Nobel Prize for medicine

Three US researchers, Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider and Jack Szostack, have won the 2009 Nobel Prize for medicine for their discovery of how chromosomes are copied and protected by the body.

The work has led to a greater understanding of human aging, cancer and stem cells. The three American scientists won the Nobel Prize for discovering telomerase, a so-called “immortality enzyme” that permits cells to divide continuously without dying and could play a major role in the uncontrolled spread of cancer cells.More about: ,
