Poland’s minister of sport has resigned in a scandal over a lobbying campaign by the gambling industry.

Miroslaw Drzewiecki has been caught up in a row over allegations being probed by anti-corruption investigators. It is claimed several officials acted on behalf of businessmen trying to water down a bill on higher taxes for casinos. The sports minister denies any wrongdoing, but says he has resigned to prevent the scandal harming important projects. Poland is due to co-host the Euro 2012 football championship. Observers say the scandal also threatened to tarnish the image of the ruling centre-right Civic Platform party. Last week the prime minister suspended the head of his parliamentary group, pending an investigation into the lobbying allegations.More about: ,
