The death toll following the Indonesian earthquake could run into the thousands. Relief workers hold out little hope of finding more survivors.

Rescue and aid workers have spread out into the hills on the island of Sumatra where hundreds of people were buried in landslides set off by the powerful 7.6 magnitude tremor. Entire villages have been wiped out in Pariaman, a rural district with around 340,000 inhabitants. Disease has become a concern, especially in Padang city, because of decomposing bodies. Shattered Padang lies on one of the most active faultlines in the world. It took the brunt of Wednesday’s quake. The UN says its involvement in search and rescue operations will end in the next few days.More about: Earthquake, Indonesia
