The Greeks go to the polls today in a general election that could see the Socialists make a comeback. They have a six-point lead in opinion polls, and are confident they can end five years of Conservative rule.

The Socialist’s Georges Papandreou may not get an absolute majority so the possibility of political limbo following the results is high, but many voters appear to have decided that Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis’s dash to the polls in a snap election is a bid to force two years of austerity on them. Most people are not keen for more pain in the teeth of Greece’s slowing economy and massive debt. Papandreou is proposing a radically different solution, with a three billion euro stimulus package, taxing the rich to help the poor. As the economy has worsened tempers have frayed. Last year Greece saw its worst rioting in decades after police killed a teenager. Unemployment is very high among the young, many of whom express disenchantment with the political system.
