Argentine folk singer Mercedes Sosa dies

Argentine folk singing legend Mercedes Sosa has died at the age of 74.

Called “the voice of the silent majority”, Sosa was credited with championing the poor and fighting for political freedom during her career. She was forced into exile and her records were banned by a military junta in the 1970s, but she returned to her homeland in 1982. She went on to collaborate with Luciano Pavarotti, Sting, and Shakira among others. Her latest album has been nominated for three Latin Grammy awards this year.More about: ,
