Taoiseach, Brian Cowen has confirmed that Ireland has voted decisively in favour of the Lisbon Treaty. With the final figures still to be announced, Cowen said the Irish people had shown they wanted to remain at the heart of Europe affairs.

“Today the Irish people has spoken with a clear and resounding voice, this is a good day for Ireland and a good day for Europe. We, as a nation, have taken a decisive step for a stronger, fair and better Ireland, and a stronger, fair and better Europe. “Today we have said to the others countries of Europe that we stand with them as we seek to move forward together. We do this because we know that we are better together and stronger together,” he stressed. The Treaty of Lisbon still has to be ratified by Poland and the Czech Republic, but the Irish vote is a major step towards it’s acceptance.More about: , , ,
