Survivors of the tsunami which hit the Samoan islands in the South Pacific could only stand and stare at the devastation.

The waves, triggered by a huge under sea earthquake on Wednesday have wiped out villages and flattened resorts. At least 119 people have lost their lives but it could take a week before the final toll of the dead and missing is known. Attention is now turning to the tens of thousand of people who need help. Food, medicine and temporary morgues are being flown to the region. Government representatives including Samoa’s prime minister have surveyed the scene – the island’s disaster council has been convened. The main impact of the tsunami struck Samoa and American Samoa , but the Pacific island nation of Tonga was also hit.
