It’s now known 1100 people died in Tuesday’s devastating earthquake in Indonesia, but it’s feared that number may rise still further. Rescuers in the port of Padang are searching desperately for survivors, or more victims, with fears that thousands may be trapped under collapsed buildings.

The 7,6 quake hit the city of 900,000 people, cutting telephone lines, roads and bridges, making the rescue effort even harder. Poorly-constructed buildings fell like a house of cards. Homes, shops, hospitals and schools all collapsed – there may be many people imprisoned in the rubble. The searchers use any means they can, even their bare hands, and victims are being located in the debris. But too often it’s too late.More about: Earthquake, Indonesia
