Crucial talks between Iran and the major powers have begun in Geneva to discuss the true nature of Tehran’s atomic ambitions.

Earlier today, the Iranian’s senior nuclear negotiator Saed Jalili was greeted by EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana. Yesterday, Jaili said he would enter talks with good will and US officials admitted there could be a rare opportunity for a bilateral meeting. Iran has repeatedly insisted its nuclear programme is peaceful and not up for discussion. The West, however, suspects it is aimed at making bombs and is considering tougher sanctions. Tension has mounted since the revelation of a second previously undeclared uranium enrichment site. The UN’s nuclear watchdog has accused Tehran of being on the wrong side of international law for failing to previously declare the plant near the city of Qom. The West has also condemned the recent test-firing of a long-range missile by the Iranians, with Washington describing the move as ‘provocative’.More about: Geneva, Iran, Nuclear Energy
