Typhoon Ketsana smashes into Vietnam

After the Philippines, now Vietnam and China are in the eye of the storm. The extreme weather that has claimed hundreds of lives in southeast Asia is continuing to cause devastation across the region.

Around 25 people were reported to have been killed in Vietnam as Typhoon Ketsana barrelled ashore, and huge swathes of coastal areas have been flooded. There are fears for the impact on vital agricultural regions in northern and central Vietnam. Even as Ketsana continues on its deadly course there are signs of another storm brewing in the region. The Philippines is braced for a second battering. The country is struggling to recover from the havoc wrought by Ketsana. Some 250 people died in the flooding that, at one stage, submerged 80 percent of the capital Manila. Hundreds of the thousands were made homeless. A huge humanitarian effort is underway in the Phillippines, but the authorities fear that such is the scale of the disaster others will die.More about: Vietnam, Weather
