DR Congo ballot marred by arson and violence At least 58 people were shot dead when security forces in Guinea opened fire on a banned opposition rally.
Thousands of people had gathered at a sports stadium in the capital Conakry to protest against the military regime which took power in a coup in 2008 under the leadership of Captain Moussa Dadis Camara. France has issued a statement strongly condemning what it called the “violent repression” of opposition demonstrators in its former colony. The military is said to be out in force mounting checkpoints on many roads. Opponents fear Camara is going to break a pledge not to stand in elections.
