A Washington-based research group says satellite images of a newly-revealed nuclear site in Iran may show entrances to an underground uranium enrichment plant.

Iran has acknowledged the existance of the site near Qom. The images have been analysed by the Institute of Science and International Security. Its director, David Albright said: “Is this a smoking gun? Its’s close to a smoking gun but it’s still not enought to that Iran has an active nuclear weapons programme.” Israel has said the site is final proof of Iran’s intention to make nuclear weapons and President Barack Obama described the discovery as part of a “disturbing pattern” of evasion. Tehran insists its facilities were built solely for the production of electriciy. The head of its own nuclear body said all its sites are open to inspection by the UN’s atomic energy agency. The US and five other world powers are due to discuss the nuclear issue with Iran in Geneva next week and further UN sanctions against the Islamic Republic have not been ruled out.More about: Iran, Nuclear Energy, Nuclear weapons
