Honduras police disperse pro-Zelaya protest

Honduran security forces have clashed with supporters of ousted president Manuel Zelaya outside Brazil’s embassy where he is holed up. Police fired tear gas at protesters who throw rocks in return.

The demonstrators had defied a curfew called after the deposed leader’s surprise return to Tegucigalpa on Monday. Brazil’s President Lula said his government would guarantee Zelaya’s right to seek refuge in the embassy. Toppled at gunpoint in a coup in June, leftist Zelaya took shelter in the building to avoid being arrested by the de facto government now in power. He is accusing the army of preparing an attack against the embassy. The EU today told all sides to “refrain from any action that might increase tension and violence”.More about: ,
