US President Barack Obama has gone on a media offensive aimed at winning over the American public to his health care reforms.
Obama gave interviews to five television Sunday talk shows – his bid to get universal care through Congress is set to be a defining movement of his presidency and he used the media blitz to press home the idea that two-thirds of the reform would be paid for by efficiency savings.
A new study has suggested that some 45,000 Americans die each year at least in part due to a lack of health insurance.
Obama has promised to introduce the reforms without raising taxes on anyone earning under 250,000 dollars per year. His problem is that polls suggest 60 percent of the population do not believe him.
Supporters of reform point out that the American health care system is the world’s most expensive – insurance premiums have more than doubled over the last year.
