Italy suffers deadliest day in Afghanistan

world news

Six Italian soldiers and ten Afghan civilians have been killed in a suicide car bombing in Kabul. Four other Italian troops and more than 50 passers-by were also wounded when the attacker drove a car filled with explosives into a military convoy. It is the deadliest attack suffered by Italy’s NATO contingent in Afghanistan and brings the number of Italian servicemen killed there to 20.

In Rome, Defence Minister Ignazio La Russa reaffirmed his country’s support for the mission: “To the vile cowardly aggressors who have once again struck in the most devious way, we tell them of our firm conviction that they will not dent our belief oour part of the international mission will continue.”

The attack comes at a time when western public support for the Afghan mission is on the wane. The Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said everyone should leave Afghanistan soon, but said he would not take unilateral action over Italy’s contingent.
