The outcome of Norway’s general election is expected to be too close to call. The ruling left-leaning coalition is narrowly ahead but Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg may not head the majority in the next government according to the latest polls. However his position as prime minister may not be challenged as the centre-right opposition remains divided.

But Siv Jensen, leader of the right-wing Progress Party, is confident her programme will lead to overall victory: “First of all we would have a more efficient state,” she said. “We would have lower taxes and a strict immigration policy which I think is important for most Norwegians right now.” The centre-right Conservatives, led by Erna Solberg, will probably be in a better position to form a government because they are acceptable for the centrist parties and are willing to talk to all the right of centre groups, if the left loses its majority. Solberg also wants to relaunch a debate over joining the European Union — something Norway rejected in 1972 and 1994.More about: Norway
