After months of diplomatic bickering and amid a growing language row, the Slovakian and Hungarian prime ministers have met to smooth things over.

Robert Fico and Gordon Bajnai agreed in the border town of Szecseny that although the road to harmony remains long, they are at least heading in the right direction. Although historically and culturally close, tensions in ethnically-Hungarian parts of southern Slovakia have damaged the neighbourly relationship. Last month the Hungarian president was banned from unveiling a statue in a Slovakian town with a large ethnic Hungarian population. Then earlier this month, thousands of ethnic Hungarians staged a stadium protest over a new Slovakian law that gives the Slovak language priority over Hungarian in public offices and institutions.More about: Hungary, Slovakia
