A suicide bomber has detonated a truck full of explosives in a village in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, killing at least 20 people. It happened in Wardek, about 30 kilometres east of the city of Mosul.

The attacker drove the vehicle into the village before dawn. Even though local security forces opened fire, the bomber was still able to set off the device. About 250 people live in the village of simple mud-brick houses. Dozens of the structures were destroyed. A second truck bomb was intercepted, and the driver killed before it exploded. No group has claimed the attack, but it bore all the hallmarks of al-Qaeda and other Sunni insurgents. 390 kilometres south, in the capital Baghdad, a spate of bombings caused even more bloodshed. At least one person was killed in an explosion in the Karrada area of the city. A short way south, in Mahmudiya, two roadside devices in a popular market exploded in quick succession, killing four people and wounding 18. And later another pair of roadside devices killed two more in a market in the southern city of Hilla.More about: Attack, Iraq
