eCall goal to save lives on the road

This call system for drivers could save lives: eCall. The worldwide mobile communications industry body GSMA has signed an understanding with the EU. The aim is to secure the deployment of this single, in-vehicle emergency call service across Europe free of charge.

The framework is designed to encourage co-operation between vehicle manufacturers, telecommunications operators, the European Commission and the EU Member States, together with relevant parties such as the insurance industry, automobile clubs and other partners. The Commission’s research says a service such as eCall can save up to 2,500 lives every year, reduce the severity of injuries by 15% and halve emergency response times.More about: , , ,
