An major exhibition of works by Akseli Gallen-Kallela has opened in Stavanger in Norway. Gallen-Kallela is Finland’s national painter, best known for his illustrations of the Kalevala – the Finnish national eipc poem. The artist has slipped out of the spotlight in recent years although his star appears to be rising with this exhibition.
Born in 1865 Gallen-Kallela started his career producing realistic depictions of rural life – portraits which were unique at that time.
The exhibition runs until the 22nd of November when it will go on tour across Europe.
