Representatives of the world’s great religions have attended a final ceremony, bringing their three-day International Congress for Peace in Krakow to an end.
The interfaith gathering in Poland was organised to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the start of World War II. The leaders had earlier visited the nearby former Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz. Part of the final ceremony was a minute’s silence in memory of victims of all wars. The congress was an initiative of the late Pope John Paul II. He proposed the gathering back in 1986. Krakow was where he had once been archbishop. Bringing the meeting to an end, the Congress adopted an “Appeal for Peace 2009.”Copyright © 2010 euronews
