Moscow has agreed to reopen an investigation into the murder of a high-profile liberal politician 10 years ago.

This after the sister of Galina Starovoitova made an appeal to President Medvedev. Starovoitova had been an outspoken human rights campaigner, and worked to defend Russia’s ethnic minorities. Three men were jailed in the case, but those who ordered the murder remain at large. The country has a long list of unresolved murders of lawyers, journalists and human rights campaigners. The reopening of the case comes just days after Russia’s Supreme Court ordered a fresh inquiry into the murder of the journalist Anna Politkovskaya. Starovoitova was shot dead in the stairwell of her St Petersburg apartment in November, 1998.More about: ,
