An estimated 3,000 Han Chinese demonstrators massed in Urumqi, the capital of the far western province to call for its top official to stand down. It is a sensitive time for China as it prepares for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic on Oct. 1 with a nationwide security clampdown.
