Ethnic tensions have boiled over again in China’s Xinjiang region over a series of syringe stabbings.
An estimated 3,000 Han Chinese demonstrators massed in Urumqi, the capital of the far western province to call for its top official to stand down.
It is a sensitive time for China as it prepares
for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic on Oct. 1 with a nationwide security clampdown.
The demonstration was a rare public challenge by Han Chinese to the ruling Communist Party in tense Xinjiang, where deadly ethnic strife with Muslim Uighurs broke out in early July.
