Shouldering the diplomatic and administrative responsibilities for NATO’s mission in Afghanistan is Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

Only recently appointed, he is having to come to terms with July and August having been the two deadliest months for NATO troops. He has been speaking to Euronews: “The security situation in Afghanistan is not satisfactory and to do more we have to step up our endeavours militarily as well as in the area of civil reconstruction and in particular, we should further develop the capacity of the Afghan security forces. We will do what it takes to succeed; we will stay as long as it takes to secure the country. We cannot afford Afghanistan once again to become a safe haven for terrorists.” But the mounting death toll among allied troops is making Rasmussen’s job all the harder.More about: Afghanistan, NATO
