The former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has been formally charged with corruption. He is accused of taking cash from an American businessman called Morris Talansky, of pushing the interests of a former legal partner and of double-billing Israeli charities for expenses for overseas fund-raising trips. The charges date from when Olmert was Mayor of Jerusalem and Trade and Industry Minister before he became Prime Minister in 2006. He has always denied any wrongdoing. Olmert announced his resignation as Prime Minister last September, saying he would wage a legal battle to clear his name.
