The US government’s car scrappage scheme has been so successful that the Transportation Department have been having trouble processing paperwork from car dealers.
The so called “cash for clunkers” sales incentive ended on Monday, but dealers were given an extra day to file paperwork.
The government’s online processing network had struggled to keep pace with a heavy volume of sales and at one stage crashed.
Drivers got up to $4,500 to trade in older vehicles for more fuel efficient new ones.
The White House said the scheme is expected to boost GDP and the US car industry is “showing signs of life.”
