The EU looks set to issue fresh proposals on the blocs immigration policy in response to Italian requests.

Italy backed by Malta, Greece and Spain feel they are under pressure from the thousands of migrants who risk life and limb to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Africa in search of a better life.

Brussels looks set to introduce a controversial system of re-distributing refugees and asylum seekers across the 27 member states to lighten the load on the EU’s border countries.

Only last week 73 Eritrean migrants died while making the hazerdous journey from Africa to Italy.
