Tuscan village celebrates record lottery win

world news

A small village in Tuscany is celebrating one of its number becoming a multi-millionaire. Bagnone has around 2,000 residents, and it’s said they all know each other. However, the winner of 147 million euros remains anonymous. The SuperEnalotto had rolled over since January before someone finally got lucky.

“I just hope it’s someone who knows what to do with the money, perhaps he will invest it here to give the area a boost,” said Bagnone mayor Gianfranco Lazzeroni. Bagnone lies in the north of Tuscany, a wealthy region popular with tourists. Until now the village’s main claim to fame was a variety of red onion. The huge prize was like a magnet, with people coming from across Europe to buy tickets. Italy itself is also counting its winnings: the state coffers have earned nearly a billion euros in lottery taxes since the start of the year.More about: ,
