Fed-up French farmers target foreign foods

Dozens of French farmers have been protesting over the presence of foreign foods in local supermarkets.

A number of stores in the south, near Marseille, were targeted by angry demonstrators who claim that locally produced goods are never flavour of the month. Farmers union leader Claude Rossignol said: “We’re in the leading fruit and vegetable producing region here in Provence and the majority of stuff here comes from abroad…it’s outrageous, it’s scandalous.” The protestors say their aim was to alert the public to what they call the “stagnation” in the market because of prices offered by major supermarkets. They say further demonstrations are planned unless supermarkets change their buying policies.More about: , ,
