Russia buries dam victims as death toll mounts

world news

| |

The funerals have taken place of victims of the flood at a dam in southern Russia on Monday.

Thirteen people are confirmed as dead. But the families of the 62 people unaccounted for have been told they are unlikely to be found alive. The turbine room of the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric plant flooded after a sudden water pressure surge. Those inside had little chance of escape. The cause is still being investigated but it is thought the state of the ageing structure and its machinery was a factor. The turbines had not been overhauled in 30 years and the company that built them said their safety could no longer be guaranteed. The search for the missing continues , but the authorities have another battle on their hands — containing huge quantities of oil that have been released into the river.More about: ,
