Polish docks on the rocks after sale collapses

The fate of two troubled Polish shipyards and thousands of jobs looks increasingly dire after the government in Warsaw failed to receive payment.

Poland agreed to sell the Szczecin and Gdynia shipyards to a Qatar based buyer to help end a long-running dispute with the EU — Brussels said state aid to the yards broke competition rules. The Qatari investment group had asked for a delay in payment, however that deadline passed at midnight on Monday. Considered the cradle of solidarity, which helped topple Poland’s communist regime two decades ago, last month Polish prime minister Donald Tusk warned he would sack his Treasury minister if the sale fell through.More about: , ,
