Taliban carbombs NATO Kabul HQ

A suicide car bomb attack outside NATO headquarters in Afghanistan shows the gravity of the Taliban’s vow to disrupt elections five days away. At least seven people in the capital Kabul’s most protected area are reported to have been killed, and scores wounded. The Islamists say they were targeting the US embassy.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said this was a drive-by suicide attack. He said: “Among our 91 wounded is a member of Parliament, Mrs. Hawa Nuritani. Four of the wounded are Afghan army personnel. The rest are civilians.” The Wazir Akbar Khan district is the base of most of Kabul’s major foreign embassies and organisations. The attack is aimed at stoking fear ahead of presidential and provincial council elections scheduled for Thursday. The Taliban, stronger than at any time since they were driven from power eight years ago, have vowed to strike polling stations, and are threatening reprisals against voters.More about: , ,
