The leader of an Islamist group linked to al-Qaeda, the Jund Ansar Allah group (Warriors of God), is among 22 people who have been killed in clashes with police in the Gaza Strip. Abdel-Latif Moussa was shot dead following a seven-hour gun battle between of Jund Ansar Allah supporters and Hamas policemen in the southern Gaza town of Rafah.

Moussa had challenged Hamas’s nationalist brand of Palestinian Islam by declaring before Friday prayers an “Islamic emirate” in Gaza – an historical term meaning clerical rule across the Islamic world.
