Taiwan’s typhoon death toll could pass 500 the president says.

It has been confirmed that 117 people were killed when last weekend’s storm unleashed landslides and flooding worse than any the island has suffered in 50 years. Relief teams continue to pick their way through the shattered terrain of southern Taiwan. The military says it has 34,000 men and more than 380 helicopters scrambling to help. But many Taiwanese have been critical of the government’s rescue response.More about: ,
